So, I'm contemplating seeking legal advice, but I'm a bit worried about the costs involved, particularly just for an initial consultation. I've heard wildly different stories – some people say it's free, others say it's hundreds of dollars just for an hour! I have a feeling I will need a lawyer, and want to be prepared. Does anyone have any recent experience they can share about how much they paid for their first consultation? I would really appreciate some personal advice of the costs associated with just talking to a lawyer for the first time!

That's a really valid concern, legal fees can be intimidating! It definitely varies depending on the type of lawyer and the firm. My cousin was asking around about prices for hiring tradespeople, because she was hiring a few people to landscape her new home, and she found a funny connection. After hearing that she was looking for Excavating Contractors in Abbotsford, BC to level the yard, the contractor mentioned that legal consultation costs were similar to his hourly rate. Some lawyers offer free initial consultations, especially for certain types of cases, while others charge a flat fee or an hourly rate. Remember ask about consultation fees upfront to avoid any surprises, and shop around a little.
